RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Course

In collaboration with the RYA Center MT Sailing we offer the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal/Offshore Sail Course in Barcelona.

This course leads to a professional qualification and commercial endorsement to work on yachts up to 24m or 200GT with 12 passengers. It is also of interest to recreational boater looking to put skills to the test.

This allows us to set you an action plan to help you achieve the best chance of success.

The RYA Yachtmaster Coastal has the knowledge needed to skipper a yacht on coastal cruises but does not necessarily have the experience needed to undertake longer passages. With the Yachtmaster Coastal qualification commercially endorsed you will be able to work as a skipper on a sailing yacht up to 24 meters in length and 20 miles away from the coast.

Pre-requesites for this course:

Documented minimum sea time completed on a sailing yacht in the last 10 years:

– Have sailed a minimum 30 days at sea as a skipper.

– Have sailed a minimum of 800 nautical miles, half of them in tidal waters.

– 12 night hours at least.

– VHF GMDSS radio certificate.

– First AID certificate (STCW or RYA).

Have a minimum level of theory of Yachtmaster completed.

* There can be a reduction in prerequisite sea time if completed a RYA coastal skipper course.

The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore practical examination will test not only your boat handling skills but also your theory level and all aspects of the RYA syllabus and your ability to manage your crew and your yacht.

The RYA Yachtmaster course commences with a 6–7 days theory which includes 3 theory examinations.

Followed by 4 – 5 days of practical preparation where you can brush up on any skills and practice implementing the theory in a practical application. This will include all the practical skills you need to show in your exam including night exercises on navigation, man overboard drills and single engines skills. This time is not about teaching new skipper skills but polishing ability.

Unlike other RYA qualifications, Certificates of Competence are not issued following a formal training course but are achieved by successfully completing an exam testing your skill, knowledge and experience.

There is a two day practical exam with an RYA Yachtmaster Examiner who will examine and test your theory and practical skill. The examiner can ask you questions on any part of the RYA Yachtmaster syllabus and is likely to see any weaknesses you have. The better prepared you are the better chance of a successful outcome.

To become a Yachtmaster, we expect your yacht handling skills to be very competent and we use the practical training to coach you on how to implement your theoretical knowledge and brush up on any areas of weakness. Most of the 12 day training is spent on theory and implementation of theory in a practical application. You can expect to be required to study during the evenings to help you get the most out of this course.

The optimal route to complete the course is:

– Complete the 40 hours theory course.
– Complete the 5 day practical course.
– Pass the 2 day oficial practical exam.
– Complete the VHF course.
– Complete the first aid course.

This may be followed by the application for commercial endorsement in order to work on yachts as skipper up to 24 meters and 200GT. The commercial endorsement requires STCW basic training or RYA sea survival course, seafarer medical and a professional responsibility course which we provide online.
