RYA Cruising Instructor Sail Course

RYA Cruising Instructor Sail Course

Turn Your Passion into a Professional Career

Are you an experienced skipper ready to share your love for the sea? The RYA Cruising Instructor (Sail) course is your definitive first step into the RYA practical cruising scheme. This globally recognized professional qualification enables you to teach, inspire, and certify the next generation of sailors under the prestigious banner of the Royal Yachting Association.

What You Will Learn

This course is not about teaching you how to sail; it is about teaching you how to teach. Because the time on the water is highly intensive, the 5-day program is structured to focus on:

Instructional Frameworks: Mastering the tools to instruct, coach, observe, and deliver constructive feedback.

RYA Standards: Ensuring you completely understand and can deliver the strict structure and quality standards required of RYA courses

Credibility & Leadership: Developing the deep confidence and enthusiasm needed to command authority both in the classroom and on the water

What do you need to take the RYA Cruising Instructor Sail Course?

The RYA holds very strict entry standards for this professional level. To be eligible for the course, you must meet the following criteria before day one

Minimum Age: 18 years.
Qualifications: RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence (Sail), commercially endorsed.
Experience & Knowledge: You must be an experienced skipper with theoretical and practical knowledge well in excess of the Yachtmaster Offshore standard. There is no time to fill gaps in your core knowledge during the course.
First Aid: A valid, RYA-approved First Aid certificate.
Pre-Entry Assessment: You must complete and pass the mandatory RYA online pre-course knowledge check before attending the practical course.
Membership: Active RYA membership is required to hold the qualification.

Course Structure & Details

  • Duration: 5 intensive days afloat.

  • Assessment & Moderation: The course is a continuous blend of coaching and evaluation. On the final day, a second RYA Trainer joins the vessel as an independent moderator to assess your instructing capabilities.

  • Student-to-Instructor Ratio: Exceptionally small groups—a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 4 students per boat—ensuring personalized attention and extensive hands-on practice.

What will you learn with the RYA Cruising Instructor Sail Course?

This course is not about teaching you how to sail; it is about teaching you how to teach. You already have the skipper skills—now we turn you into an educator. Because the 5-day program is highly intensive, it focuses deeply on pedagogical techniques, leadership, and the exact mechanics of RYA training:

Advanced Instructional Frameworks & Coaching

The Art of "Coaching vs. Telling": Learn how to guide students to answers through structured questioning rather than just giving commands.

Structuring a Lesson: Master how to break down complex nautical maneuvers (like Mediterranean mooring, pontoon berthing, or sailing onto a mooring buoy) into simple, digestible steps for beginners.

The Debriefing Matrix: Acquire proven techniques for delivering constructive, encouraging, and actionable feedback. You will learn how to handle student mistakes as valuable teaching moments without bruising their confidence.

Adapting to Learning Styles: Every student learns differently (visual, auditory, or hands-on). You will learn how to identify these styles quickly and adapt your teaching methods on the fly.

Mastering RYA Training Standards & Syllabus Delivery

Syllabus Execution: Deep dive into the RYA Competent Crew and Day Skipper syllabi. You will learn exactly what needs to be covered, what standard the students must achieve, and how to assess them fairly.

The RYA "Method": Align your personal sailing style with the official RYA teaching principles, ensuring consistency, safety, and clarity across all training drills.

Safe Session Management: Learn how to run a training vessel safely, balancing the educational needs of the students with the ultimate safety of the crew and yacht under varying weather conditions.

Command, Credibility & Classroom Leadership

Command Presence: Develop the confidence and professional enthusiasm required to command authority, command respect, and maintain a positive, calm atmosphere on board—even when students are stressed.

Effective Classroom & On-Deck Briefings: Practice delivering sharp, engaging, and interactive briefings before hitting the water, using whiteboards, mock-ups, and handheld models effectively.

Crew Psychology & Management: Learn how to manage the group dynamics of a diverse crew, ensuring that quieter students get enough helm time and more dominant personalities are managed constructively.

The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Course is a nautical training program designed to develop advanced sailing skills and knowledge. It leads to a professional qualification recognized globally. Graduates are certified to operate yachts up to 24 meters or 200 gross tonnage (GT) in offshore waters. The course covers navigation, seamanship, safety, and leadership aspects of yacht operation.

During the Yachtmaster course, you will develop advanced skills in navigation, maneuvers, sea safety, and leadership in the maritime environment. You'll learn to make informed decisions in challenging situations and operate yachts safely and effectively in coastal water

  • Have sailed a minimum of 50 days at sea as skipper.
  • Have covered a minimum of 2500 miles, with at least half of them in tidal waters.
  • Possess a high level of spoken and written English, as the courses are conducted in English.

The course includes both theoretical and practical assessments to measure your knowledge and skills. At the end of the practical course, an official examination is conducted with an RYA examiner. It's important to note that the cost of the official examination, approximately 230 GBP, is not included in the course fee.

Upon passing the examination, a Certificate of Competence is issued. This is known as the Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence.

The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore qualification enables you to work in the maritime industry on vessels up to 24 meters or 200 GT with a maximum of 12 passengers up to 150 miles from the coast. However, it does not permit working as a professional skipper on Spanish-flagged vessels.

You can enroll directly on this page. Just make sure to meet the requirements mentioned above. You will find detailed information about the course, available dates, and the enrollment process.

RYA certificates are globally recognized and accepted in most countries. In Spain, there are over 20 schools accredited by the Royal Yachting Association.

However, Spanish legislation only recognizes and accepts these certificates in certain specific contexts. RYA certificates are not recognized in Spain. To sail as a Spanish national on a Spanish-flagged vessel, an appropriate Spanish nautical qualification is required.

This course is personalized, and we accept a maximum of 5 students per course.

The RYA training system offers several advantages that we recommend to our students due to its effectiveness:

  • Excellence in learning to sail.
  • Content focused on practical navigation and improving specific skills.
  • Internationally recognized certification valid for sailing worldwide.
  • Easy and fast acquisition of professional credentials.

The course is divided into two parts: a 5-day (40-hour) theoretical course and a 5-day (40-hour) practical course, followed by an official 2-day practical examination at the end of the practical course. It is highly recommended to complete both courses in sequence to ensure a higher likelihood of success in the examination.
