This course covers celestial navigation, ocean passage planning, meteorology including rotating tropical storms, and electronic navigation aids. The course includes the use of a sextant and the theory of how to convert this information to provide positional data. It's considered a theoretical course, but with Neptuno, you will have a substantial amount of hands-on work, including sextant observations.

What do you need to take the Yachtmaster Ocean course?

This is the ideal course for individuals holding the Yachtmaster Coastal or Yachtmaster Offshore certificate who are preparing for their first ocean passage. It's also suitable for captains or commercial officers planning to operate in unlimited areas.

Possess a RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore certificate of competence.
Hold a Restricted Radio Operator Certificate (VHF only) or a GMDSS Short Range Certificate or a higher grade marine radio certificate.
Hold a valid First Aid certificate (STCW or RYA)
Pass the Yachtmaster Ocean oral examination.

What will you learn with the Yachtmaster Ocean?

You will learn everything you need to know in order to undertake your first ocean passage.

Representation of the Earth

You will learn everything your surroundings have to offer you to provide information, such as: the Earth and the celestial sphere, the PZX Triangle, the sextant, time measurement, meridian altitudes, the Sun, stars, and other signals.

Maritime Tools

Knowing how to use the most important objects as guides, such as compass checks, satellite navigation systems, or orthodromic navigation.

Planning

Interacting with the sea is not only about physical skill; theoretical resources you've learned, such as meteorology, passage planning and execution, and communications, are also very important.

It's important to consider the requirements to be eligible for the Yachtmaster Ocean oral examination.
You must be at least 18 years old, have completed an ocean passage as skipper or as mate while on a passage, the log must show a non-stop run of at least 600 miles, the yacht must have been at sea continuously for at least 96 hours, and the yacht must have been more than 50 miles from land while sailing a distance of at least 200 miles. Lastly, all qualifying sea time must be within the 10 years prior to the examination
